I'm going to make a New Year's resolution a couple of days early. The holidays have left me feeling bloated with bad foods and negative energy (the in-laws are sweet but so is their cooking).
I've been eating sushi every Wednesday evening for the last few months, but I'm going to make it more a regular part of my diet. I'm tired of the fatty foods my family prefers. If I need to eat differently from them so be it.
I've had a good breakfast and lunch diet for many moons now, but dinner is often my weakest meal nutrition-wise. Back to sushi - well, more of it. So...
Every day - lots of green tea and water, 30 minutes on the treadmill
Four times a week - salmon, cereal with flax seed
Twice a week - sushi, rice snacks w/seaweed, fresh broccoli, fresh tomatoes
Once a week - Asian vegetables (in stir fry or trip to Chinese restaurant), a dish with ginger, a dish with garlic
Am I missing anything? Talk to me (I'm not alone in wanting to increase my healthy eating habits).
What's your favorite thing to drink when it's cold outside?
Jasmine Green Tea.
Or a Tom and Jerry (1 raw egg, cover with sugar, add half and half, add a splash or six of Myers' Dark Rum)
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
Beethoven - Ode To Joy
Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
Blondie, The Tide Is High
Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Fire and Ice
Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor - 2nd movement, Adagio
Mozart - Rondo in A major for piano and orchestra, KV 386
A Fine Fisherman And The Big Blackfoot River
The Chieftans - Danny Boy (With Diana Krall)
Etta James - Steal Away
Kodo - Ibuki - Taiko Drums

Galaga, baby. The original and best.
Have you ever ridden in a hot air balloon or a helicopter? Where did you go?
I rode in a helicopter in Hawaii in 1997. We had one tour canceled because of high winds, so we got a longer trip the next day for the same price. The chopper pilot took us up to the summit of Haleakala and around all of Maui. It was the most extraordinary travel experience of my life...to date!
How are you celebrating Halloween today?
Dressing up like Scotty from Star Trek and chilling out with my boys (who are dressing as Darth Vader and some Satanic creature). I'll literally be chilling out as it's going to be flipping cold and windy here....
I canna change the laws of physics, captain!
I embrace faith to a degree but I'm not an intensely religious guy. I think that religion, faith, prayer, and meditation are all talking about the exact same thing: tapping in to the communal energy of the universe that's beyond our conscious understanding.
That's the "something bigger than myself" that so many people are searching for. Some find it through organized religion, but isn't that just the power of the self magnified? Communal prayer can lead to healing. A sense of community feeds the souls of the lonely.
We all want to belong to something or feel a part of something. Even people who say they are introverts find some comfort in shared experiences.

I recently attended a Taizé service in St. Paul, Minnesota and an Episcopal service in Seattle, Washington. Here are some thoughts on each:
The Taizé service was extraordinary. Drawing on ancient rites and using chant, it created a worship atmosphere unlike any I've yet experienced.
The Episcopal Service was the "Holy Eucharist I," which uses an older form of English. It reminds me of my youth, when I attended St. George's Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia (when I was visiting my grandparents). At the service in Seattle, I especially enjoyed how there were just 10 or so people attending. I like the smaller services - they seem more meaningful.

Witness - a study in simplicity
In the film "Witness," the city is portrayed in a wet and ugly atmosphere. The country, and the simple life of the Amish, are lit by candles and exist in serenity.
Isn't simplicity and peace what we're all searching for?
Maybe a close relationship with God - with the community - is difficult in our modern lives because we emphasize separation and individuality. Maybe the answer is balance between community and self - and making sure there's quiet time for reflection as well as social time to interact with others.

What do you think of Stephen Colbert's satirical bid for the U.S. Presidency?
I think it's good to keep a light heart about all the seriousness surrounding the election. It's not that it's unimportant, but it is worth lampooning the ridiculous aspects.
